The Broad Path & Deception

I’ve grown tired of the way the “broad path” is often portrayed on social media- dark, violent, negative- like a march to the slaughter. It makes deception look obvious. And that’s the problem.

If deception looked ugly, fewer people would fall for it.

The truth is, the broad way usually looks easier, simpler and comforting. It can look peaceful. It can look like happiness. It can even look spiritual. And that’s exactly how we’re tempted. The devil doesn’t come as a big scary monster- he comes as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)

Yeshua never described the broad way as terrifying. He described it as wide, easy, and well-traveled.

“Wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”
– Matthew 7:13

Many enter it not because they hate God- but because it feels reasonable. People naturally lean on what they know, or what they think they know. Familiar teachings feel safe. Well-worn paths feel trustworthy. When something sounds sensible, comfortable and is affirmed by the majority, it raises no alarm. Deception presents itself as rational.

Yeshua and His Temptation

When the devil tempted Yeshua in the wilderness, he tempted Him with comfort, relief and shortcuts.

  • “If You are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”
    (Matthew 4:3)
  • “I will give You all the kingdoms of the world… if You will bow down.”
    (Matthew 4:8–9)
  • “If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down for it is written ’He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’
    (Matthew 4:6)

Every temptation offered Yeshua a way to avoid hardship while still appearing faithful- he even quotes Scripture (Psalm 91:11-12)

The devil attempts to use God’s own words to justify disobedience while keeping the outward appearance of faith intact.

That’s deception.

Why the Broad Way Doesn’t Look Like Disobedience

The broad way often looks like:

  • Familiar theology
  • Comfortable traditions
  • What everyone else is doing
  • A life that feels controlled & manageable

And sometimes, it genuinely looks good.

That’s why pride is so dangerous. We tell ourselves, “I’ll know if I’m being deceived.”

But Scripture says otherwise.

“The heart is deceitful above all things.”

– Jeremiah 17:9

Deception works best when we’re confident we’re immune to it.

The narrow way in comparison can seem bleak, joyless or even like a burden-

Why can’t I eat this?

Why can’t I worship how I want?

Why cant I trust my own judgement?

These kinds of questions often come from thinking of obedience as a burden rather than a relationship. But God isn’t a tyrant holding back joy. He’s a loving Father guiding us and protecting us- even when we think we know better.

When obedience feels like weight, it’s hard to see its purpose. Yet the narrow way isn’t about loss; it’s about life. Seen through love, not fear or pride, obedience becomes a path that leads to growth, clarity, and true joy.

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light

– Matthew 11:30

The way is narrow not because it’s cruel, but because it’s intentional.

It’s harder to walk because life is growing there.

The narrow way requires more attention, obedience, humility and trust- but it leads somewhere real.

“Indeed small is the gate and compressed is the way which leads to life, and few find it.”
– Matthew 7:14

Not because God hides it, but because comfort is louder. It takes more effort to notice, patience to follow and humility to accept, but the truth is always accessible to those willing to seek it.

Living out faith isn’t about avoiding challenge- God refines us in the fire, shaping us to walk in His ways.

Pretty Doesn’t Mean True

The left path in my painting doesn’t end in fire or chaos.
It ends in nothing.

It’s simply… pretty.

That’s what complacency looks like.
Not rebellion.
Not outright hatred of God.
Just ease that satisfies the flesh.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
– Proverbs 14:12

The narrow way looks harder, slower, and less appealing at first glance. Who knows what lies ahead?

God does– that’s the point.

We couldn’t do it without Him. So we rely on Him to guide every step.

The way is narrow, but it leads to life- it leads home.
