In chapter 2, Paul established the foundation of unity: that those once far off and those near have both been brought into one new humanity in Messiah, breaking down the dividing wall and removing hostility through the cross. What was formerly separated- covenant identity, access, and belonging- has now been reconciled into one body through Messiah, creating peace and making both groups fellow citizens within the household of God. Now, Paul expands and deepens this revelation, explaining the mystery that was hidden in former generations: that this unified body is not limited by ethnicity or prior status, but is the result of YHVH’s eternal purpose revealed in Messiah, where the nations are fully included as co-heirs, co-bodied, and co-partakers of the one promise.
1 Of this reasoning, I Paul, the prisoner of Messiah Yeshua for you [the] Gentiles.
2 If indeed you have heard of the administration of the grace of God having been given to me toward you
In Greek, “administration”- oikonomia
- oikos– house / household
- nomos– general law, order and arrangement
The literal understanding would be, “the stewardship / household ordering of God’s grace that was given to me for your sake”
The new administration is
- a new assignment given to Paul; preaching to the Gentiles
- a new phase of revealing God’s grace; Gentile inclusion
- a new outworking of the same covenant purposes
A new stewardship of God’s grace- meaning an entrusted role in revealing His plan, not a new set of laws for Gentiles.
3 that by revelation He made known to me the mystery just as I have written before in brief-
4 by which you are able reading [it] to understand my insight into the mystery of Messiah,
5 which in other generations not was made known to the sons of men as now it has been revealed to the holy ones, His emissaries and prophets in Ruach-
6 the Gentiles are joint heirs, and joint body, and joint partakers of the promise in Messiah Yeshua through the good news.
The Greek: einai ta ethnē synklēronoma kai syssōma kai symmetocha tēs epangelias en Christō Iēsou dia tou euangeliou
The prefix syn/sym means “together”
- synklēronoma– from klēros, meaning inheritance portion
- syssōma- from sōma meaning body
- goes back to Ephesians 2:16 “one body” language
- symmetocha- from metocha meaning to participate or share in
Paul stacks these deliberately, building an understanding which covers:
- Status: shared inheritance
- Structure: shared identity structure
- Experience: shared participation
All simultaneously share tēs epangelias “the promise”: not multiple promises, separate covenant promises, or divided inheritance systems-
It is one promise applied identically to one unified subject: that the nations are brought into the covenant family, sharing in the inheritance, Ruach, and the people of God as one united body.
7 Of which I became servant according to the gift of the grace of God, having been given to me according to the working of His power
8 To me, the very least of all the holy ones, was given this grace, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Messiah.
9 And to enlighten all [to] what [is] the administration of the mystery- having been hidden from the ages in God the One all things having created.
10 In order that should be made now to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly realms through the congregation, the manifold wisdom of God
11 according to [the] purpose of the ages which He accomplished in Messiah Yeshua, our Adonay,
12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through instrumentation of trusting Him
13 On this account, I implore not to lose heart at my tribulations on behalf of you, which is your glory
14 Of this reasoning I bow my knees to the Father of our Adonay Yeshua Messiah-
15 from whom every family group in heaven and on earth is named.
In Greek “every family”- pasa patria
- pasa = every / all
- patria = family group, household line, kinship structure; “fathered identity group”
This is about origin of identity and authority structures- not literal families in heaven.
In Second Temple context, it points to:
- heavenly beings ordered in relationship to the Father
- spiritual “households” or orders of authority
- the idea that all identity structures- visible and invisible- derive their naming and authority from God
So “families in heaven” is better understood as angelic orders / heavenly host structured under Fatherhood
The “whom” (ex hou) grammatically refers back to ton Patera – “the Father”
Paul says:
- I bow toward the Father
- from that same Father every structure of identity is named
16 that He might give you according to the riches of His glory, with power to be strengthened by His Ruach in the inner man
17 to permanently dwell the Messiah, through faith in your hearts in love being rooted and being founded.
18 In order that you may be fully able to comprehend with all the holy ones what [is] the breadth and length and height and depth,
19 to know then the surpassing knowledge love of Messiah so that you may be filled unto the fullness of God.
20 To the One now being able above all things to do exceedingly that we ask or think according to the power working in us
21 to Him, the glory in the congregation and in Messiah Yeshua to all the generations of the ages of the ages- Amen.
The mystery that was hidden in former generations is now made known in Messiah Yeshua through the Ruach– namely, that the nations are not secondary participants, but are brought fully into the covenant reality as co-heirs, a joint body, and co-partakers of the one promise. Paul’s language is intentionally stacked and shows integration: one promise, one Messiah, one people formed into one living body.
From this foundation, he shifts from identity to indwelling- asking that Messiah would permanently dwell within, establishing believers as rooted and grounded in love so they can comprehend the vastness of His love that surpasses knowledge. The chapter closes where it began: with the supremacy of God’s purpose being accomplished in Messiah, bringing glory not only in the assembly but across all generations forever.
